Description: SapphireYogo Gulch, Judith Basin Co., Montana, USA 0.176 ct.5 x 3 x 1mm This is a Yogo Sapphire from Montana. It is translucent, gemmy, and cornflower blue. Legend has it that in the late 1800s a gold prospector, waiting for a storm to pass, panned some gravel in Yogo creek. He found gold and staked a claim. As he mined for gold he noticed small blue pebbles, some of which he sent as a present to an acquaintance. To his surprise his acquaintance wrote back thanking him for the sapphires. He later sent a cigar box full of the newly discovered sapphires to Tiffany and Co. who rewarded him with $3,750 and a request for more (his gold mining at the time has only made him $700). Sapphires have been mined at Yogo Gulch ever since. They are usually small and cut stones rarely weigh over a carat. About Me:My name is Krista Sawchuk, I am a recent PhD graduate in geochemistry.
