Background: The United States Merchant Service, USMS, was the first branch to take the fight to the Axis, making the highly dangerous run from the US to England in the dark, early days of the War. The Merchant Marines took high casualties, compounded by the convoy rarely being in a position to pick up survivors. The pay was high but so was the danger. Eventually US Navy Armed Guard details were placed aboard Merchant Ships to man the guns and anti aircraft armament. The Naval Armed Guard endured the same hazards but resentfully at a fraction of the pay of their Merchant counterparts. It took years for the USMS Survivors to be awarded US Veteran Status, deservedly so. Interesting enough the uniforms and hats were basically identical to the US Navy and Coast Guard except for the insignia. The ranking system was somewhat similar.
