Description: USMC/USN/COAST GUARD issue "LIFE PRESERVER LIGHT / PATENT No. 2,355,247" from the COLVIN-SLOCUM BOATS, Inc. MODEL A of New York, N.Y.. Circa 1942. RARE! RARE! RARE! Wartime ORIGINAL. WORKING! USMC and USN Aviators; AAF pilots and air crews. Usually the wartime-era manufactured RESCUE/SURVIVAL LIGHTS that are found today are the metal (e.g. the USN's M-567 Light) and molded plastic models from the DELTA ELECTRIC COMPANY of Marion, Indiana, TAUNTON PEARL WORKS, of Taunton, Mass., BRIDGEPORT METAL GOODS Co. of Bridgeport, Connecticut, and FULTON Mfg. Co. of Wauseon, Ohio. This is the now RARE WWII-era COLVIN-SLOCUM BOATS, INC. Model A very rarely turns up...and rarely in any condition!! The company made a Model A and a later Model B -- but this is the earliest, wartime Model A. "...introduced in 1942 and approved by the USCG also utilized by the US Navy. Red lenses were the international merchant marine standard for red lenses for distressed personnel along the same lines as pyrotechnics, red being the international color for Distress. The clips on these lights are as typical with the manufacturer. By 1943 life preserver lights were issued with each life preserver whether kapok or pneumatic." (Dustin, 2016, Mil. For.) This example is distinguished by: + the Red RESCUE/SURVIVAL Body, + the hemispherical Red Lens (with protruding flange "wings" for ease of gripping/turning with cold hands!), + the heavy Steel "Alligator" Clip attached directly to the body of the Light. + the 32" length of white cotton braided Cord with an attached Steel Safety Pin.***** This one required a single D-cell battery (not included)! This is a WORKING light!! This was worn clipped or pinned to the Marine/Naval Aviator's Clothing, the Type B-4 Pneumatic Life Vest, the Kapok Life Vest, or any of the various individual and crew Survival Rafts. All sea-going vessels (including the Army Transport Service ships and the Merchant Marine) had RED RESCUE lights, which indicated "PERSON," attached to Rafts and Life Vests. The original pasteboard CARTON (2-1/4" x 2-1/4" x 4-1/2") in which it would have come (but which is NOT, repeat NOT included) would have read: LIFE PRESERVER LIGHT DESIGN PATENT 135.099 MANUFACTURED BY COLVIN-SLOCUM BOATS, Inc.
