Sterbebild are also known as Funeral Cards or Death Notices. The vast majority of Germans in World War II were Catholics. Like many funeral services today, a small card (usually baseball card size) were printed with a photo and brief history of the deceased. This custom has existed for several centuries and was very prevalent during the Second World War. This particular card was printed in remembrance of: Sergeant Franz Kaserbauer. Franz was highly decorated during his service and received the Iron Cross 2nd Class, Infantry Assault Badge, Russian Front Medal, and the respected Silver Close Combat clasp. He fell on July 20, 1944 on the Eastern Front at the age of 30. The photo is exceptional and shows the proud Franz wear the 2 place ribbon bar for the Iron Cross & Russian front. The Silver Close Combat Clasp and the Silver Infantry Assault badge are readily visible as well. This card would be a great addition to a collection.
