There were three patterns. The first was made in 1905-1906, the second was made in 1915-1918 and the third was made during WWII. They are typically blued. During 1933-1945 period, Germany used three different marking systems to identify manufacturers. From 1925-1940 a number code were used. From 1937-1940 commercial trademarks were used. From 1940-1945 letter codes were used. This has serial number marking "28 33". Overall, this bayonet is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age and history. The press catch is functional with average spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They both have light scrapes, oxidation and discoloration. The finish appears to be in the white. The escutcheons securely fasten the grips. They have light tool marks with strong slots. There is grit in the slots. The grip panels have light compressions, draglines, scrapes and scratches. They both have darkened with age. The spine, fullers and sides have handling marks and scuffs, but no notable wear. The blade edge has no nicks or dings and appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a semi-sharp straight point. The finish is in the white. There is cosmoline on the blade. The right side guard is marked with a serial number, "28 33". There are no other visible markings. The scabbard is in Fair - Good condition, considering its age and history. The frog stud is securely fastened to the body. The mouth, body and finial have scattered impact marks and oxidation. There are only a couple small spots of the original finish. The scabbard has no visible markings. This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your Mauser k98 rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
