Description: WWII Mark 1A Directional Gyro - Unknown Maker One exceptionally clean and complete WWII era Mark1A Directional Gyro that was probably removed from a dismantled bomber, fighter or transport aircraft as used by Commonweath during the war years. Not sure who made this unit (Sperry Gyroscope, London?). There's no data tags or the like as fitted to it like the US made AN 5735-1 DG units. I do see the following stamped in the case: 6A/1298 474430 / B but no other markings, stampings or engravings. No paper storage tags, either. . Graphics on this instrument are bright mustard yellow and appear to be NON-RADIUM but we have NOT checked it with diagnostic instrument nor do we intend to. Be mindful many of the wartime instruments do contain amounts of of radioactive material that is fine left encapsulated but probably not a good idea to fiddle with. Black wrinkle-finish paint is in great shape. The air filter housing is intact. Absolutely stunning graphics. Directional control knob moves freely without binding. No drop damage or modifications to the case. No bugs or indications of dirt or water marks behind the glass. This one hasn't been molested. I'm not the expert on Brit airframes, but suspect the Mark 1A was used in everything from the iconic Spitfire to the really exceptional stuff like the Mossie or the Lanc. The US 5735s were used in everything from the BT-13 trainer all the way up to the B-29 Superfortress, and I always suspected the same held true for the British stuff. If you needed a nice Mark 1A for a panel restoration, this would certainly be a wonderful example. What you see in the photo series is representative what you get.
