TEXT GOES HERETEXT GOES HERE --> Offered here is a WWII era 1940 German Mauser k98 rifle M1884/98 bayonet and scabbard. There were three patterns. The first was made in 1905-1906, the second was made in 1915-1918 and the third was made during WWII. They are typically blued. During 1933-1945 period, Germany used three different marking systems to identify manufacturers. From 1925-1940 a number code were used. From 1937-1940 commercial trademarks were used. From 1940-1945 letter codes were used. This one has a commercial trademark. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The press catch is functional with stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They both have light erosion, impact marks and scrapes. Some of the finish is in the white, the rest has turned a darker patina color. The flashguard has several impact marks. The escutcheons securely fasten the grips. They have light tool marks with strong slots. The grip panels have light draglines and scrapes. The serrations are distinct. It has its original factory finish. The spine, fullers and sides have scattered light oxidation and handling marks. The blade edge has no nicks or dings and appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The blade retains most of its factory finish with finish loss the last couple inches towards the tip of the knife. The left side ricasso is marked with the manufacturer trademark "E.u.F. Horster" and the right side ricasso is marked with the serial number "1697 / r". The left side pommel has faint German proof marks. The spine is marked "40" (1940). The scabbard is in Poor - Fair condition, considering its age and history. The frog stud is missing (which is why we gave it a poor rating - the rest of the scabbard is still functional). The mouth, body and finial have erosion, impact marks and oxidation. Most of the original finish has worn off. The front of the scabbard, above where the frog would be, is marked "5847 / L". The back of the scabbard is marked "E.u.F. Horster / 1939". This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your Mauser k98 rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
