Description: Nice condition Navy GCM named to James Nichols, dated 1947. Since it was awarded in 47 - that would mean that he would have enlisted in 1943. Checking muster rolls there are quite a few James Nichols, but only one who enlisted in 43. This Nichols enlisted in Louisiana in September of 1943, and a year later was on the Destroyer USS Maury as a Torpedoman. The Maury saw extensive combat throughout the Pacific in late 1944, and supported the invasion of Luzon at the end of the year. She returned to Pearl Harbor in April of 1945 and was decommissioned at the end of that year. There are no roll entries for Nichols in 46-47, so he must have remained in a land based role for those years. In 1948 we find him on the Destroyer USS Hank, again as a Torpedoman. He must have signed on for an extension or enlisted for another 4 years. I do not find him in rolls after 1948. Medal is in very good condition and shows standard just-post-war stamped engraving on the reverse. The only condition issue is a couple tiny finish blemishes to the edge of the planchet. No other issues.
