Description: A superb example of a World War Two ARP Warden's Heavy Brass Hand BellDated 1939 Used to warn of impending gas attack, and issued to local ARP wardens across the countryat the beginning of the War, they were used to great effect during the Battle of Britain and the 2 Blitzes of 1940 & 1944 Measuring approx 10" in height, and with a sold wooden handle, this heavily-cast, nicely patina'd brass hand-rung bell retains its original cast-iron chain & clapper and is clearly marked A.R.Pon one side of the bell's rim,whilst on the top of the bell is marked J B39for James Barwell Ltd of Birmingham (JB Handbells were also known as a 'Fiddians' as James Barwell Ltdpreviously bought the Fiddian Bellmaker in 1840) A gorgeous-looking & important surviving ARP item from Hampshire's Second World War Home Front...
