Description: Antique late 19th century folk art frame with a German chromolithograph. This picture frame consists of four carved members criss-crossed at the corners. The carving is vaguely foliate and overlapping (see photos). At the top is a semi-lunate tympanum with a cryptic (symbolic?) carving of what looks like a stylized, or foliate, winged hourglass. The wood is finished in a honey-brown varnish or shellac. I fit the frame with a very attractive late 19th century chromolithograph of flying fish ("FLUGHAUN") escaping (or trying to) a hungry or protective gull. It fits perfectly and presents beautifully. Outside size is 12" x 8", opening is 8 1/2" x 5 1/2". U.S. buyers please. [Boston Primitive]
