Description: PLEASE READ SHIPPING DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY BEFORE BUYING! To learn more about us please click on our profile We are dealing with a post mortem portrait of the famous Russian warlord, chief-commander of the Russian Army during the Patriotic (French-Russian) War of 1812, Field Marshal Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov (1745-1813). This portrait drawing (with a great possibility a preparatory drawing for an engraving, or book illustration) was made shortly after the downfall of Napoleonic 1st Empire in 1814. The author, the well-known English graphic artist William Marshall Craig possibly stayed in St. Petersburg then. Exactly in this period engravings of his - "The Triumph of Russia" and "The Great Square of St. Petersburg" were published, which according to Thieme-Becker (see image nr.4) indicates the author's stay in in the Russian capital. As additional argument for this supposition, Thieme-Becker urges the fact that there were no paintings of the artist (only in this year!) at the 1814 annual Exhibition of London Royal Academy. William Marshal Craig (ca. 1765 - ca. 1834 London) was mentioned for the first time as living in Manchester in 1788; in 1790 he is already in London. He was a drawing teacher of Princess Charlotte, then in 1812 he became Painter in Water-Colour of Queen Charlotte, in 1820 appointed Painter of Duke and Duchess of York. From 1810 William Marshall Craig was also a member of the "Associated Artists in Water-Colours" and participated in the exhibitions 1810-1812). Being a very popular illustrator, he often made engravings after his own drawings (sic!), painted portait miniatures, oil portrait and genre scenes. His drawings for engravings were mainly motifs from Canada, Russia, South Africa, etc. (which is also an argument for visits of these regions). Works of W.M. Craig are to see in museums of Edinburgh (National Gallery of Scotland), Manchester (City Art Gallery), Nottingham and London (British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum; Our images nr. 7-9 show three similar drawings in the collection of latter).
