Lilly saw the need for an automatic regulator.” Folks, life was dangerous enough for the workers in the Homestake Gold Mine without his newly patented invention – “an instrument designed for the purpose of regulating the operations of air, steam and electric hoisting engines.” Although William J. Lilly, the inventor invention saved thousand of lives and is in continued use today – he called it: A SIMPLE LITTLE MACHINE THE LILLY HOIST CONTROLLER (Mine Life-Line). As many of you know, I love reading and finding old Western History and I go around searching for stories and pictures that have been seldom found much less read and seen. Here is a history entitled “Life-Line of the Mines,” by Mildred Fielder about the invention of William J. Lilly who developed the Lilly Hoist Controller. Let me begin with the ending, This is the story of Lilly’s fascination with the frailties of the old hoisting engine of the B&M shaft of the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota. On the old hoists, everything depended on the operator. If the operator was distracted, dozed or drunk, that could spell trouble. In 1911, Lilly patented a throttle valve but his goal was a hoist regulator – an instrument designed for the purpose of regulating the operations of air, steam and electric hoisting engines which would absolutely control the engines whether the operator was incapacitated or not. Well, Ebay does not let me have enough space to tell the entire story but suffice it to say that if you are into mining history, this is for you, because it is a seldom read and little seen history of a device that saved thousands of lives – all to the thanks of William Lilly. He is pictured here in a 1906 photo and with his family in 1911 along with the Lilly Hoist Controller. Please read this. There were many a western story published – the common ones about Cowboys and Indians are listed on Ebay every day but the rarer ones like this unusual and seldom found mining story about the inventor and his invention which has saved countless lives. Collectors treasure them and their price guide value rises every day. They are hard to find. I hunt them out because really the better, untold and rarer stories were published in the rest. Here’s one of ‘em. Following my retirement, I have dedicated my remaining hours to indexing the Genealogy of our western pioneers. During my research, I discovered that thousands of our kinfolk lay unfound and unrecognized on some book dealer’s shelf gathering dust. Because Old Western History and Memorabilia was printed before computer indexing, I index every item I sell. This complete index will be bound and included in this offering at no additional cost. Humbly, I am trying to keep our history alive. I hope you appreciate the effort. While others clip ads from magazines, I save history. It’s a shame that our past is being lost. It’s as simple as that. My wife kids me that after I find a piece I like, buy it, read it, research it, take a picture, scan it, write the blurb, pay the Ebay entry fee and commission, that I end up making about 50 cents an hour. But, OH HOW I LOVE THIS OLD WESTERN HISTORY. What a story, Rare Story!!! Great Pictures. You will love it as it was published in this old complete western magazine of many years ago. The issue is in excellent condition, the cover is pristine and in vibrant color. As clearly stated in my description, this is featured story in a rarely found and seldom read unusual and complete western magazine. I don't give out name of publication or date because I have caught competitors copying my index and work and trying to sell it as theirs. I hope you understand.
