Description: White Plains is a city in Westchester County, New York. An outer suburb of New York City, it is the county seat and commercial hub of Westchester, a densely populated suburban county that is home to approximately one million people. White Plains is located in south-central Westchester, with its downtown 25 miles north of Midtown. At the time of the Dutch settlement of Manhattan in the early 17th century, the region had been used as farmland by the Weckwuaeskeck Native Americans, a Wappinger people and was called “Quarropas”. To early traders it was known as “the “White Plains”, either from the groves of white balsam, which are said to have covered it, or from the heavy mist that local tradition suggests hovered over the swamplands near the Bronx River. The first non-native settlement came in 1683, when a party of Connecticut Puritans moved westward from an earlier settlement in Rye and bought 4,400 acres, presumably from the Weckquaeskeck. In 1758 White Plains became the seat of Westchester County. The unincorporated village remained part of the Town of Rye until 1788 when the town of White Plains was created. All I could find on “Muldoons Rest” was an article in the 1908 NY Times, “Sec’y Root again at “Muldoon’s Place”; He arrives at the White Plains Sanitarium and joins the Building-Up Squad.”, “Elihu Root, Secretary of State, reached “William Muldoon’s rest sanitarium” on the outskirts of White Plains, this afternoon.” (full text not available). nytimesarchives It is, however, on this card. There is a “Woolworth” logo in the left corner on the reverse and “Curt Teich Photochrom” on the middle bar. The card is not postmarked but is a Divided Back (1907-1915) and is in good condition with minor wear except for some surface damage lower right corner and a clean, clear image. The reverse is blank and clean. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
