Description: Whitby Jet Beach Tumbled Piece This is a super example of Whitby Jet that has been naturally tumbled on the beach. The wood grain of this fossil wood beachcombed piece can be seen, and it has a satin sheen in places. Whitby Jet is only from the Yorkshire coast of England and is rare and hard to find. Whitby Jet was originally used by the Romans, but it became very fashionable to use in Victorian jewellery. It is fossilized remains of a tree similar to the 'Monkey Puzzle' tree, and is approximately 140 million years old. The piece weighs 9.5g and measures 34mm x 19mm x 16mm. (All weights and measures are approximate) It is a super piece which would appeal equally to collectors, for Lapidary work or to display in the home.
