Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE One of the more palatable thistles. The stems, peeled, can be eaten raw or cooked and the root can also be eaten raw or cooked, added to soups and stews. Native Americans used wavyleaf thistle for food and medicine. By why eat such a beautiful native thistle when you can enjoy it in your garden? Native thistles rarely exhibit what we think of as the invasive tendencies or cause the problems that non-native thistles do. Wavyleaf thistle has a much larger and attractive flower head than its noxious weed relative, Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense). The dark green phyllaries—scale-like coverings, or bracts, of the flowerhead base, involucre—are wavyleaf thistle’s most distinctive feature, followed by its silvery hairy wavy leaves. Its summer flowerheads are a light pink to, more commonly in the population from which we harvest seeds, a soft white with a subtle blush of pink which is the less common color for this species. Being native to open grasslands and disturbed sites, wavyleaf thistle will tolerate most garden condition so long as the soil is not too wet. Native from Canada to Mexico wavyleaf thistle can be grown just about anywhere and tolerates high temperatures and drought. Pollinators are attracted to the flowers and birds eat the seeds and use the pappus, the feathery hairs attached to the seeds, for bedding. Wavyleaf thistle, like other thistles, is a preferred flower of native bees. Note: If you order more than one lot of one species of seeds, for example you place two orders of 100 seeds, or whatever variation is offered, we assume you want 200 seeds and your order will be sent in one seed packet. Additionally, the seeds offered for this species have been prepared for your ease of handling and planting by removing the pappus (feathery bristles or hairs) of the seed. You will receive cleaned seeds for ease of handling though a few seeds may contain remnant seed covering. This does not affect planting or germination.
