The opening of the gallery coincides with the end of World War II and the return of a number of exiled artists back to France. The magazine was created in October 1946 (n°1) and published without interruption until 1982 (n°253). Its original articles and illustrations (mainly original color lithographs by the gallery artists) were famous at the time. The magazine covered only the artists exhibited by Maeght gallery either through personal or group exhibitions. Among them are:[4] Henri-Georges Adam, Pierre Alechinsky, Bacon, Jean Bazaine, Georges Braque, Pol Bury, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Roger Chastel, Eduardo Chillida, Alberto Giacometti, Vassily Kandinsky, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Léger, Lindner, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Jacques Monory, Pablo Palazuelo, Paul Rebeyrolle, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Saul Steinberg, Pierre Tal-Coat, Antoni Tàpies, Raoul Ubac, Bram van Velde. Among the authors publishing essays and poems are (in alphabetical order):[5] Guillaume Apollinaire, Marcel Arland, André Balthazar [fr], Yves Bonnefoy, André du Bouchet, André Breton, Joan Brossa, Jean Cassou, René Char, Pierre Descargues [fr], Jacques Dupin, Georges Duthuit, Frank Elgar [fr], Claude Esteban, Charles Estienne, André Frénaud [fr], Stanislas Fumet [fr], Jean Grenier, Marcel Jouhandeau, Jacques Kober [fr], Michel Leiris, Georges Limbour, Henri Maldiney [fr], Jean Paulhan, Gaëtan Picon, Francis Ponge, Jacques Prévert, Raymond Queneau, Pierre Reverdy, Michel Seuphor, Jean Tardieu, Lionello Venturi, Pierre Volboudt, Christian Zervos. Following the death of Aimé Maeght in September 1981, the Derrière le Miroir n°250 was designed as a tribute to the work of Aimé Maeght and his wife Marguerite (who had died before him in 1977). This special 112-pages issue was named "Hommage à Aimé et Marguerite Maeght" and was intended to be the last one. As it summarised all contents of the previous issues, it was finalised only in August 1982. In the meantime, n° 251 to 253 (the very last number) were published respectively in February, May and June 1982.” (-From Wikipedia) Kandinsky Bio: “Wassily Kandinsky pioneered abstract painting in the early 20th century. He believed that geometric forms, lines, and colors could express the inner life of the artist —a theory quite evident in his own explosive paintings, which were often inspired by music. Today, Kandinsky's canvases sell for tens of millions at auction and belong in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Tate, among other prestigious institutions. In 1911, Kandinsky played a central role in organizing Der Blaue Reiter, a group of avant-garde artists in Munich that included Franz Marc and Paul Klee. From 1922 to 1933, he taught at the Bauhaus, the historic Weimar institution that brought together artists including Josef Albers, Lazlo Maholy-Nagy, and Piet Mondrian.” About the seller: Aside from being a professional artist, I have been working with original works on paper by 19th and 20th century modern and contemporary masters since 2004, with a focus on the great Salvador Dali. Regarding my fine art background and expertise, I take great pride in any original work on paper that I represent. The fine art world can be overwhelming and there are a lot of false experts, my goal has always been with educating the buyer. I have learned a lot in my nearly 20 years of working with fine art masters, as well as many highly reputable galleries and private dealers. All items I sell have been extensively researched, documented in the official catalogue raisonnes of the artists when applicable, and I provide a signed lifetime guarantee/ certificate of authenticity of the fine art I sell, legally binding me to my word. I stay away from dubious works of art, and if there is a concern I am unaware of I fortunately know the right people to ask. In 2000 after high school I moved from Connecticut to attend the George Washington University and was curator for Galerie Lareuse with expert Jean-Michel Lareuse for 11 years in Georgetown; member of the IFPDA (International Fine Print Dealers Association) specializing in original works on paper by 19th & 20th century masters such as Picasso, Dali, Chagall, Miro, Braque, Renoir, Leger, Matisse, Magritte, Kandinsky, Buffet, Dufy, Lautrec, Calder, Cassatt, Delaunay, Haring, Warhol, Degas, and many others. I oversaw and personally handled hundreds of original works on paper and was tasked with extensive research, appraisals, sales, certification, private acquisitions, as well as museum-quality professional framing. I assisted with transactions involving many prestigious museums and organizations, including a 2006 sale via Galerie Lareuse of Picasso's rare 1912 etching "Nature Morte, Bouteille" to the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, a 2011 sale of Vincent van Gogh's very rare c.1890 etching "Portrait of Dr. Gachet", and a 2012 sale of a unique original gouache drawing by Sonia Delaunay which is now located in The Phillips Collection. I also assisted in the art estate of the late and great Eunice Shriver, and many other private collections in the DC area. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me as I am here to help! Kind regards, Kreg
