WALTER SCHIRRA SIGNED LETTER & PHOTO, NASA, ASTRONAUT, PROJECT MERCURY

Description: A typed, signed letter dated November 29, 1962, from NASA astronaut Walter M. Schirra Jr., accompanied by a small black-and-white photograph. The letter, on NASA letterhead, is addressed to Mr. Joseph Baltake Jr. of Camden, New Jersey, and measures approximately 8" x 7 1/8". It appears to be signed. The paper contains a bald eagle watermark and it has a crease from being folded. Also included is a small black and white photograph of Schirra, it is approx. 5 1/4" x 4". At first glance it appears signed, however it is not, the inscription is part of the image. In very good condition. Walter M. Schirra Jr. (1923–2007) was a pioneering American astronaut and one of the original "Mercury Seven," the first group of astronauts selected by NASA in 1959. Schirra is distinguished as the only astronaut to fly in three different space programs: Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo. His first spaceflight, aboard Mercury-Atlas 8 in 1962, made him the fifth American in space, where he orbited the Earth six times. Schirra's second mission, Gemini 6A in 1965, marked NASA’s first successful rendezvous in space with Gemini 7, a crucial step for the future of space exploration. In 1968, he commanded Apollo 7, the first manned mission in the Apollo program, which was essential for testing the Command/Service Module. Known for his precision, skill, and sense of humor, Schirra made significant contributions to early spaceflight and was integral to NASA's achievements in safely advancing human space exploration.
