Very good hardcover. Tight binding, solid spine,cracks to hinges but holding well, clean unmarked text. Decorative gilt board and spine, deckled fore & bottom edge, 8vo, 130 pages. VOLUME TWO only of a two volume set. A gorgeous Art Nouveau Ex Libris Bookplate, by the English artist ROBERT ANNING BELL, for WALTER RALEIGH. signed in the plate R A BELL XXXVIII. This is the EXTREMELY RARE early large version, measuring approx. 3.5” x 5.75”. The bookplate is larger than, but matches one donated by Helen J. Stearns to the Currier Museum of Art. Robert Anning Bell RA (1863-1993) was an influential artist of the Arts and Crafts Movement with links to the University of Liverpool. His artistic range was wide but somehow he has become best known for small, very personal artworks which are almost always hidden from view: the bookplate. Several of his bookplates can be found in the British Museum.
