Description: Walter Emerson Baum (1884-1956) 7th Street, Allentown PAInk on Paper195011-1/2" x 14" (sight)Signed, Dated, and Titled Lower RightFrame Size: 20" x 21-5/8" A very nice pen and ink drawing by Walter Emerson Baum, noted by many as the "father of art in the Lehigh Valley." The drawing depicts 7th Street looking south toward the Lehigh County Soldiers and Sailors Monument at the circle on Hamilton Street. Baum included the Pollard's Firestone Tire Store (230 N. 7th Street) in his drawing; Pollard's closed this location in 1966. This is a wonderful view of the city and will most likely bring back memories to those of us who lived in Allentown during this time. Baum's ink drawings of Allentown are somewhat uncommon, and this is an outstanding example. The drawing is in very good condition with no apparent defects and is professionally matted and framed under glass in a simple black wood frame that is also in very good condition. Note that the faint "shadows" you may see particularly in the first picture are just that - shadows. Since the drawing is under glass, it is difficult to photograph it well. We purchased this painting many years ago from Boris Wainio, Allentown art dealer and auctioneer for the Baum School's Annual Art Auctions, and it has been in our private collection ever since.
