Here is an Absolutely Beautiful, ULTRA RARE & HIGHLY DESIRABLE Vintage c.1942 WWII Era Original Concept Production Art by the World Renowned Animation & Toy Companies—Walt Disney Productions & Fisher-Price Toys, Featuring the Original Disneyana Concept Painting For the Collaborative WWII Animation-Toy titled, “#744 Doughboy Donald (and Pluto)” (1942), which is the exact image art used on the actual wooden pull-toy from 1942 for the double-sided lithographic art of ‘Pluto’ which is the rarest & most-desirable Disney/Fisher-Price toy sought after by collectors from 1942 (Please look-up the toy & # online for image reference if so inclined, as we were not able to receive image use permissions from thisoldtoy, who didn’t respond to our email inquiries asking for permission rights in time for our current listings.). This rare artwork is fresh from a local estate here in “Toy Town U.S.A.”, East Aurora, NY, home to us and headquarters of Fisher-Price Toys (Subsidiary of Mattel since 1993) and is a consignment for our clients, which will be sold ‘As Is/As Described’, in its current ‘As Found’ condition, and had been stored away this whole time in their personal collection since circa the 1940’s-50’s. Truly a rare find and would make the perfect addition to any serious Walt Disney/Disneyana or Disney/Fisher-Price Art Collection!!! We have 6 other Ultra Rare Concept Production Paintings that were used for published toy products by the two respective companies, 2 by Walt Disney & Fisher-Price, and 4 by Fisher-Price, so please have a look!!! Walt Disney & Fisher Price Collaboration: Fisher Price began it’s collaboration with Walt Disney Productions beginning in 1935 as an official licensee and their sales contract lasted until 1959. Fisher-Price produced fifty licensed Disney toys over that time period and the toys featured many of Disney’s favorite animated characters, beginning with #530 Walt Disney Enterprises ‘Mickey Mouse Band’ push-toy. Other push/pull toys soon made their way into the W.D.P./F.P. production line with supporting Disney Characters and were also known by the term ‘trundle toys’, and many patents for the old toys can be found online now. “In 1935, after seeing the potential of using Disney characters on their toy lines, Fisher-Price became a licensee of Disney under [Herman] Kay Kamen, and created a variety of wooden pull-toys. Many of the toys would create noises when pulled, and their appeal allowed for strong sales under their Disney contract until 1959. Such a long and uninterrupted relationship between the two companies was unusual, as certain resources typically went towards the efforts in World War II, and caused many companies who used those resources in their toys to halt production.” (Source: Mike Van Eaton of Van Eaton Galleries, Animation, Fine Art & Collectibles, Sherman Oaks, CA. A special thank you and shout-out to Mike for his help & information. Please check out them out) These types of original concept art paintings were typically done in-house or by freelance artists hired by the respective companies and the production artwork they produced hardly ever appears on the open market for sale or are put through auction, and as such are incredibly rare to find. Many times, the older art was kept in-house by the companies’ art departments and filed away, or were thrown out over time as various companies became defunct, merged or didn’t need anymore—The early concept art was never intended to be sold to the general public or was thought of as ‘collectible’ at the time, as it is today with market trends for original hand-painted animation cels and/or other types of production art from Disney or other like companies. A similar piece of Disney/Fisher-Price concept art of ‘Donald Duck’ the toy’s lithograph sold at auction for $3,200.00 back in 2017 (Estimates of $2500-3500, sale included two pull toys featuring two slight variations of the same litho from the concept art), but is the only real ‘genuine’ piece that has been sold publicly from my research in more-recent times. Our piece will start well below that at auction, so don’t miss this rare opportunity and happy bidding!!! About The Original Toy: The “#744 Doughboy Donald” toy was 13-3/4” long and featured Donald dressed as a soldier on an artillery cart complete with two trench mortars and ‘Pluto’ pulling the cart. Donald’s head goes up & down as he bounces back-and-forth on his artillery cart to a loud ‘quack’, and was individually boxed. From research, the toy was purportedly made in response to the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. It was the last toy to be produced that year in 1942 before the war put a halt to production, which didn’t start back up until 1946. It was only in production for one year and is considered the rarest & most desirable toy of 1942. The catalog byline for the toy was, “The best defense is a strong defense”, which according to the book, Fisher-Price 1931-1963: A Historical, Rarity, Value Guide, by John J. Murray & Bruce R. Fox (1987) was “…a very ironic statement, considering the fact that Fisher-Price became so involved in the war effort that a new toy line was not introduced until 1946.” About Our Concept Painting & Size: Our listed concept production art painting is watercolor/gouache & ink on illustration board, and the Walt Disney ‘Property’ stamp is on verso and reads: ‘Property of Walt Disney Productions, Not To Be Used Without Permission’, and there is also hand-drawn number & letter notation on verso ‘883 K’ (similar to other pieces). No artist signature or name is on the piece. The Disney label with printed text, ‘Walt Disney Productions’, is affixed on the front lower left just below the image area (a little loose from age), and there are some hand-written in pen & ink notations in the lower margin (with light pencil guides) to include the text: ‘Strip in’ (underlined twice) as appears lower left under the label which has an arrow pointing to the angled text, ‘on PLUTO see tracing’, lower left, and ‘ACTUAL SIZE’, lower middle, and ‘F.A. #4299’, as appears lower right respectively though I’m not sure what they represent (artist name perhaps? and internal inventory number???). The size with margins is 8-1/8” x 12”, Image size 5-1/8” x 7-5/8”. There are hand-drawn registration lines with margin notes & arrows, stating size & reference text about the printing bleed areas. Condition: The Painting is in Good-Rare++ condition for its vintage age & especially its rarity, with no real significant color fade at all on this beautiful piece—it’s as beautiful as the day it was painted and is as good as any collector could hope to find in its original ‘As Found’ condition. The board was originally taped along its back corners back-in-the-day to its original mat and was previously framed, but the painting was removed from the old mat and frame (due to their poor condition), and is being sold loose and there is slight negligible surface paper loss in the corners from removing the tape. No significant damage to the painting itself aside from minimal & slight moisture staining (thin line) along its top image edge from where some moisture had wicked-down into the illustration board through the margin and lightly affected the top edge of the painting but isn’t too bad and doesn’t detract much at all from the overall image which still presents well. There is also some other moisture staining with slightly more-visible tidelines in the outer margin areas which don’t reach the image thankfully, but do travel through the hand-written text areas. There is overall normal toning of the illustration board from age and from being matted & framed with old non-archival materials (acidic), with a more toning around the outer edges, but still displays nicely. The illustration board is somewhat dry as well from age (and from the paper & wood acidity) and will look gorgeous all framed-up, and we highly suggest framing it behind UV Conservation glass & archival matting for protection and conservation purposes. No foxing evident but there is tiny paint specks scattered here & there on the front but are only barely noticeable here & there in the outer margin areas. Slight topical soiling (lightly grubby) from age and a few other surface blemishes which are only lightly visible in the outer margins. The artist’s original tack holes are still visible in the outer margins where he tacked it to a board to paint. The painting will be securely hard-packed for safe shipping for FREE with full-insurance of the winning bid for Domestic Buyers. Please Note: International Buyers will assume the flat rate cost for shipping of $130.00 USD via USPS Global Express Guaranteed International ONLY with insurance (up to the allowable insurance coverage amount of $2499.99 for most countries [whatever it works out to be]), sorry. EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) to contact us with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!! Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
