If your turn signals and emergency flasher aren't working, then often the problem is your flasher relay. At this point your original relay is 40-50 years old so it's no wonder that it's finally given up the ghost. Luckily brand new German-made relays are now available and they're not only top quality but also extremely inexpensive! Simply unplug your original relay and plug in the new one - assuming there aren't any other electrical problems going on (blown fuses, corrosion on the contacts, bulbs burned out, hazard switch falling apart, etc), you should be good to go! Do it once - do it right! What you get: 1 x Part # 111953227D (alt part # 111953227A & 191953227A among others) - Turn Signal / Hazard Light Flasher Relay - 3-terminal - made in Germany by Flösser Applications: Beetle 1971-1977 Super Beetle 1971-1979 Bus 1971-1979 Karmann Ghia 1972-1974 Type 3 1971-1973 Thing 1973-1974 This relay can also be used on 1965 and earlier 6v cars that have been converted to 12v but you will need to add a ground wire from the relay to the body. This relay can not be used in place of the 9-pin or 4-pin relays without significant rewiring. As this is an electrical item there are NO RETURNS. However if you have a problem please let us know and we will work with you. These relays are always good in the box - they are never DOA so if your turn signals or emergency flashers still aren't working you have other wiring problems. Technical Notes: Troubleshooting the turn signals and / or emergency flashers on your VW is easy however it can be time-consuming. Both circuits get their "flash" from the relay so if your emergency flashers work but your turn signals don't or vice versa, most likely it's NOT the relay. If both have failed then the relay is a good place to start. Always be sure to check the condition of your emergency flasher switch - these are a crimped together switch and as they get old and start to fall apart, they will affect various electrical connections.
