Artist: Elise P Speights Elise Ladson Peurifoy Speights (May 8, 1920 – December 21, 2012) Elise Ladson Peurifoy Speights, a celebrated Raleigh artist, was born on May 8, 1920, in Walterboro, South Carolina, to John Huiet and Esther Hyrne Peurifoy. Elise began her formal art training in the 1940s at the United Art Institute in Raleigh, North Carolina. Although family and work played central roles in her life, she never stopped painting and exploring new artistic styles over her 60-year career. She pursued further education in the arts, attending classes at Meredith College and the NCSU School of Design, where she embraced the modernist tradition. From the 1960s to the 1990s, she participated in summer workshops with abstract painter and teacher Joe Cox, whose mentorship had a profound impact on her work. Known for her versatility, Speights painted in a variety of styles, ranging from organic, emotionally charged abstract compositions to cool, calculated color-field pieces. Her art reflected her surroundings and inspirations: coastal boat scenes, portraits, figure studies, and, in her later years, bold black-and-white patterned works. This diversity kept her portfolio fresh and dynamic, but it is her abstract canvases that remain her most iconic contributions to the art world. Elise’s work was featured in numerous prestigious exhibitions throughout her career. Highlights include multiple showings at the North Carolina Museum of Art in 1962, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1974. She also exhibited at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the NC State University Student Center in Raleigh, NC, and several times at the Durham Art Guild in Durham, NC. Elise passed away on December 21, 2012, in Raleigh, NC. Her legacy as a prolific and innovative artist continues to inspire, and her paintings remain a testament to her lifelong dedication to creativity and exploration.
