McCoy Pottery Company began producing pottery in 1899. Nelson McCoy Sr. established the Nelson McCoy Sanitary and Stoneware Company with the help of his father and five stockholders in 1910. The company produced utilitarian stoneware in Roseville, Ohio until 1991, when it closed due to declining profits. McCoy pottery is highly collectible and known for its vibrant, true-color glazes. Early McCoy pottery pieces had potters cutting into the bottom of the clay, and later pieces had blue ink stamps on the side. Numbers inside the marks indicated the size of the piece.
