It was opened on January 10, 1863, and ran between Paddington and Farringdon Street. Since then, the London Underground has grown to become one of the most extensive metro systems in the world, with over 270 stations and 11 lines. The first deep-level electric railway in the world, the City and South London Railway, opened in 1890 and ran from King William Street in the City of London, under the River Thames, to Stockwell. The Circle Line was completed in 1884, and the Bakerloo Line opened in 1906. In 1933, the Underground Group and the Metropolitan Railway became part of the London Passenger Transport Board, taking control of all the capital’s railway, bus, tram, trolleybus, and coach services.
