Description: This incredible, handpainted majolica Zaccagnini ceramic pelican was created sometime after the death of Ugo Zaccagnini, a master sculptor and model maker, in 1937. The marking at the bottom of this unique, nearly flawless piece features the capital Z on its underside with a squiggly line through it — a symbol Zaccagnini's family adopted as a tribute to their father, who started his illustrious career at the Richard Ginori Ceramic Company. (The squiggly line was meant to represent Tuscany's spectacular Monte Oliveto, a view cherished by Ugo Zaccagnini.) This mid-century pelican, which likely had a number on it that is now worn off, stands about 9.5 inches tall and has a length at the base of 4.5 inches. From the left of the base to the point at the end of the tail feathers measures 6.5 inches. There are no chips, no cracks and no crazing. The only flaws to note are a few extremely light scratches on the pelican's breast (see last photo) and a patch of pock marks on its head that appears to be original to the piece (see 2nd to last photo).
