A gymnastics club was founded in Wickrath as early as March 1850. When and why the gymnastics club broke up is not known. The second founding took place in March 1851. Unfortunately there are no records of this new club. But the people of Wickrath had fully recognized the value of the gymnastics movement and founded a gymnastics club for the third time, namely on July 10, 1860, which, despite all the turmoil of the time, still exists today and has become an integral part of the life of the Wickrath population. Larger sporting events were held in Wickrath in the first few years after the company was founded. As early as 1864, the gymnastics club was commissioned to organize the regional gymnastics festival. It didn't take long for the Wickrath gymnasts to achieve sporting success either. Although the club did not have a suitable gymnastics room in 1906 and 1907, the gymnastics supervisors knew how to keep the gymnastics group together. A games department was founded in 1908, and the existing games department then separated from the gymnastics department in 1922. The gaming department, which became independent, gave itself the name “Wickrather Spielverein 08”. Unfortunately, the upward trend was abruptly stopped by the First World War. Of 100 gymnasts who were sent to the front as soldiers, 25 did not return. Gymnastics life could not really get going after the lost World War because the gymnasium and sports field were occupied by the occupying troops in the years 1918-1920. In 1937 the Wickrath gymnastics club and the Wickrather game club merged under the name “Turn- und Spielverein 1860 eV Wickrath”. After the end of the Second World War, the laborious reconstruction slowly began. The gymnasium, which was not damaged in the war, was made available to the Catholic parish as an emergency church. At times we had to do gymnastics in the riding hall of the state stud farm in the Wickrath leather factory. In 1951 a makeshift gymnasium was inaugurated, and now the renewed upswing could no longer be stopped. In 1959, Mayor Heinrich Sattelmeyer handed over the expanded gymnasium to TuS 1860 eV Wickrath. The gymnastics department is now located in the Adolf Kempken Hall. In 1982 the hall was officially given the name of the major sports sponsor from Wickrath. The gymnastics club from 1860 has changed a lot over time and adapted to the general trend of the time. While initially there was only gymnastics for men, today many modern sports are offered.
