The History of Noritake China Noritake grew out of a trading company that was originally established by the Morimura Brothers in New York in 1876. Noritake China began as NipponToki Kabushiki Kaisha, Ltd. in Japan in early 1904, in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. the goal of the factory was to create Western dinnerware for export. It took until 1914 before the first dinnerware was high quality enough to export. Before 1920 most of the dinnerware was hand-painted & difficult to mass produce. Up until 1921 Noritake predominantly marked exports with "Nippon", one word used to describe the country of Japan. In 1921 American import laws changed requiring the place of origin be marked on the products in English. Since Nippon was an adaptation of a description of the island country in a native language, Nippon was no longer acceptable. New back-stamps were presented using "Japan" or "Made in Japan". Noritake imports to the USA ceased with the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. For the period from the end of WWII in 1945 through April 28, 1952, the USA & it's allies occupied Japan. Noritake wares from 1948-1952 bear "Made in Occupied Japan" or "Occupied Japan". In the 1946-1947 recovery period of post-war Japan, Noritake production for American servicemen became an important part of Japan's economic recovery. Surprisingly, even though Noritake is found on it's dinnerware, it wasn't until the 1980's that Noritake was able to register it's name, due to the fact that Noritake was a place. However, because of the consistently high quality & reliability of their product they were finally given permission & registered the name "Noritake".
