Based on the original Dark Town Battery mechanical bank c1888 by the J. & E. Stevens Company of Cromwell, Connecticut. In good working order. Please reference photographs for condition of paint loss. This bank is a 50's reproduction of a turn of the century mechanical bank titled Dark Town Battery. This one is titled Hometown Battery. It is made of cast iron. The same process was used to make this Authentic Reproduction as the original was made. Molds were made from the original Bank, hand cast in sand, then hand assembled and painted. From zandkantiques talking about the original Darktown Battery: Circa 1888: Originally advertised as the Base Ball Bank, James H. Bowen’s superbly designed Dark Town Battery was manufactured and distributed by Cromwell, Connecticut’s J. & E. Stevens Company and stands as a lasting celebration of America’s first professional Negro Baseball League in 1887. This immensely popular and highly desirable mechanical bank is the finest piece of 19th century sporting Black Americana ever produced.
