Description: This 1955 vintage watercolor of the working waterfront of Philadelphia shows both air and sea transportation. An airplane in the sky heads towards its destination while a tugboat plies the water below. The current mid 50’s skyline of a Philadelphia sets the background for the pier buildings that line the Delaware River waterfront at the time. It seems that the view is from a boat in the river looking northward to the US Customs House at the far right. The Lavino Shipping pier is shown at the far left. The watercolor is signed lower right “V. Sivers” and dated ‘55. At the lower left is the inscription “Philadelphia 14/9/55”. This dates the work to September 14, 1955. The artist may have been on a foreign visiting ship as he captured this view. The actual watercolor measures about 13 3/4” x 17 1/2”. It is framed within a simple stepped wood frame of the period. Overall framed measurements are 15 1/2” x 19 1/2”. The watercolor, under glass, is in good condition with little to no damage, discoloration or fading. The frame has minor issues here and there but is in firm condition. This view of Philadelphia is unusual as it shows the working waterfront seventy years ago, with fairly good detail. The airplane overhead is an added bonus of visual and compositional interest. The work could be reframed but it is certainly ready to hang on the wall of your choice as it is shown. Continental US only. Thanks.
