DRIVE-IN THEATER After 1945, rising car ownership and suburban and rural population led to a boom in drive-in theaters, with hundreds being opened each year. More couples were reunited and having children, resulting in the Baby Boom, and more cars were being purchased following the end of wartime fuel rationing. By 1951, the number of drive-in movie theaters in the United States had increased from its 1947 total of 155 to 4,151. THE NEW YORKER The New Yorker is an American weekly magazine featuring journalism, commentary, criticism, essays, fiction, satire, cartoons, and poetry. Founded as a weekly in 1925, the magazine is published 47 times annually, with five of these issues covering two-week spans. Although its reviews and events listings often focus on the cultural life of New York City, The New Yorker has a wide audience outside New York and is read internationally. It is well known for its illustrated and often topical covers, its commentaries on popular culture and eccentric American culture, its attention to modern fiction by the inclusion of short stories and literary reviews, its rigorous fact checking and copy editing, its journalism on politics and social issues, and its single-panel cartoons sprinkled throughout each issue. ABOUT THE ARTIST: George M. Shellhase, was a noted artist-reporter whose work has been exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y., The Illustrator’s Club N.Y. and The Norton Museum of Art in Palm Beach, among many other fine art institutions. His drawings have appeared in The New Yorker, The New Your Times Magazine, Esquire and The Palm Beach Post, just to mention a few. Mr. Shellhase, who moved to Palm Beach County from Darien, Conn., in the early '60s, sold his first drawing from a Philadelphia street corner when he was 14. And with the exception of brief periods at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Art Students League, his free-flowing style was self-taught. Since that first sale, Mr. Shellhase's works have been shown in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Illustrators Club of New York, the Norton Gallery in West Palm Beach and the New Chapellier Gallery of New York. Mr. Shellhase's illustrations and cartoons appeared also in Esquire, The Saturday Evening Post, The New Yorker, Collier's, The New York Times and other periodicals. "George Shellhase is almost everybody's idea of an artist," Robert Hunter, former director of the Norton Gallery, said in 1984. "He always has a pencil or pen in one hand and a sketch book, or perhaps an old letter, in the other. ... Sensitive pencil lines and luminous washes of watercolor are his stock in trade and he can even make a ball pen sing." "I'm an idea man. They just come to me," the World War I Army veteran once said of his career. He drew the contrary conductor Arturo Toscanini while hiding beneath a music stand in the corner of an orchestra pit, and for several years he sketched polo games in Boca Raton for Palm Beach County newspapers. He sketched several actresses, and drew Carol Channing while she sat on his lap. He also sketched scenes from notorious trials for the old New York Herald Tribune, drew souvenir cards of old Key West and scribbled sprightly lobsters in a variety of humorous poses. "It's best to be born with real talent," he once philosophized. "Next, learn to love the art of drawing and draw, draw, draw. Love the great beauties of nature. ... Experiment with enthusiasm the infinite variety of nature's designs and forms. Love humanity and interpret at your best the many events that unfold before your eyes each day." Shellhase was a resident of Ocean Ridge, in Palm Beach County for more than half of his life. His style and techniques where a combination of pen and pencil drawings with water color details. But he was mostly recognized for his cartoons in the New Yorker in the 40’s & 50’s. Shellhase died in 1980 at the age of 93. IMPORTANT NOTES: Customer satisfaction is our number one priority.
