Vintage Living & Learning ReadStart Sight Word Game W/ Laminated Cards 1995 New!

Description: This vintage, sight word game is adorable! It was made by Living & Learning in 1995. It is brand new and in excellent condition! Although the box has been opened, the game has never been used. So, I consider it new. I did highlight the directions, with an orange marker, and write some notes with pencil. I laminated the cards for durability! This item is clean and comes from a smoke free home. This game is for ages 4+ and is for 1-4 players. The contents include the following,: 64 cards with word on one side and matching picture on the reverse side, double-sided picture gameboard, 4 plastic game pieces, 1 die, 1 set of instructions with directions for 2 different games, notes for how to get the most from ReadStart, and further ideas for adults (making labels, introducing letter sounds, and reading together), and a slot-in card to assemble Magic Answer Box (already used, so construction is complete). When you push a card, picture side up and top edge first, into the top slot of the Magic Answer Box, it will slide down and out of the lower slot with the word side up! In the early stages of learning to read, it is important for children to build up a stock of words that they recognize immediately on sight. This is called a "sight vocabulary". It is helpful if this sight vocabulary is made up of "high frequency" words. These are words which tend to feature regularly in children's conversation and which they will encounter a lot in early reading books. ReadStart can be used in a number of ways to teach and reinforce 64 of these high frequency words. As children begin to recognize and read these words, they will gain confidence and find sharing and reading books even more enjoyable. Each side of the ReadStart board helps children learn 32 words. The cards with a purple stripe, below the picture, are used with the purple side of the board. The cards with the blue stripe, below the picture, are used with the blue side of the board. The words on each side of the board are of the same level of difficulty. Game 1 focuses on learning new words. To set up, one side of the board is chosen along with the appropriate cards. Each player chooses a colored playing piece and 1 or 2 of the cards. Players put their playing piece on the matching colored space, on the board, and place their cards in front of them, picture side up. The Magic Answer Box is then stood, ready for use, at the side of the board. Player roll the die, moving their piece the required number of spaces, on the board, towards a picture that matches one of their cards. Players can move in any direction, on the board, as long as they move to an adjacent space and do not return to the same space in that turn. It is usually possible to reach the destination space within 1 or 2 turns. On reaching the right picture, the player picks up the matching card and posts it into the Magic Answer Box. Players should be encouraged to look carefully at the word that comes out. Keeping the word face up, adults ask players what the word is. If they say the correct word, they should be given a lot of praise. If not, then a positive phrase such as, "Let's try again.", should be used. The winner is the first player to turn over all their picture cards by reaching the pictures, on the board, and reading the words correctly. By playing Game 1, children can slowly build up knowledge of some of the words in ReadStart. When children feel confident, with a few words, they can try playing Game 2. Game 2 focuses on practice with a set of words. To set up, one side of the board is chosen, along with the appropriate set of cards. Next, select from the cards the words children have learned, and put the rest away. Five cards are dealt, word side up, to each player. Any remaining cards are placed, in a stack, next to the gameboard. Players put their playing piece on the matching colored space, on the board, and place their cards in front of them, word side up. The Magic Answer Box is stood, ready for use, at the side of the board. A player starts the game by rolling the die and moving their piece the required number of spaces, on the board, towards a picture that matches one of their word cards. When a player reaches the right picture, he/she posts the word card into the top of the Magic Answer Box and checks that the picture that pops out matches the picture on the board. If it is correct, the card is kept, picture side up. If incorrect, it is kept word side up, and the player takes another card from the stack. If a player does not know any of their own words, but can recognize one belonging to another player, they may match that card in the same way, by landing on the matching picture, posting the word, and checking it. If correct, the player keeps the card and gives one of their cards to the other player. If incorrect, the player must pick up another card from the stack. If a player does not know any of their own words or those of the other players, they can go to the question mark in the middle of the board. On landing here, a player may take a look at the picture on the back of any of their cards, taking care not to let the other players see. The winner is the first player to turn over all their words cards by reaching all the matching pictures on the board. In Game 2, players can gradually build up the number of words that they play with, at a pace that suits the players. This game is a fun way to learn to read. Children will love feeding the words, they've read, into the Magic Answer Box. They'll be excited and rewarded when the right picture pops out! ReadStart has a lot of educational value, too. It teaches the 64 first words children will need for beginning reading. Repeat practice, during play, means that children will quickly gain confidence. Two levels of play mean that ReadStart can be used for introducing new words and for reading practice. And, the instructions give adults tips for helping children with reading. ReadStart also has play value. It combines learning to read with all the fun of a board game. The Magic Answer Box adds thrill and lets children check words themselves. And, adults can choose which words to read and how long the game will last. This game is rare and very hard to find! I have not seen any others currently selling online! This game would make a wonderful addition to a kindergarten or 1st grade classroom! It would also be great to have in a household with young children! I am hoping to find it a good home.
