Description: A vintage Super Spirograph #2400 drawing toy by Kenner in its box from about 1971 from Snowdrift Antiques. Although the origins of Spirograph go back to Victorian England, the familiar drawing toy dates from the 60s. Denys Fisher developed a marketable version of Spirograph in the early 60s. He was an engineer and businessman who supplied precision components to NATO. Fisher's moment of inspiration came when he was listening to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. He used a series of perforated cogs and racks into which a pencil could be inserted. Denys Fisher originally intended to market Spirograph as draftsman's tool, but he later decided it would sell better as a toy. The larger, “Super Spirograph” with an expanded library of shapes other than circles was released in 1971. This Super Spirograph is #2400, the original vintage version, not one of the re-releases that have been produced since 1986. This Super Spirograph has all of its drawing parts. As seen in the images, all of the curves, wheels, straight bars and end caps, drawig board, T-square original paper and green holding pins are accounted for. The only thing missing is the original blue pen, which really is irrelevant because after about 50 years, all of the pens are dried up anyway. To create new designs, the go to replacement pen for Spirograph aficionados is the BIC Cristal pen, available pretty much anywhere office and drawing supplies are sold. They come in many different colors which will allow you to create even more beautiful works of Spirograph art than even Denys Fisher imagined. I am including a 24 pack of assorted color Bic Cristal pens as shown in the photos so the recipient can get right on with making art! The original T-square is present as well as the cardboard drawing board, instruction book and original Spirograph paper. The board and paper are wrapped in their paper band which sits loosely around them since its original tape has dried out. The cardboard drawing board is free of pin holes, leaving me to believe it has never been used. The box has an unglued, bottom left corner in both the lid and base There is a small piece of scotch tape residue on the center/top box lid. This set is in excellent vintage condition overall. This is a beautifully conceived and fun to play with “toy” for kids of any age.
