Description: Offered for auction a stunning "VINTAGE IMPRESSIONIST? SEASCAPE OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS BOARD "NIGHT FISHING" PHILIPPINES SIGNED J. I. DAVID / NO RESERVE". This painting depicts two fishermen ready for a night of fishing in a small boat. This is a night scene, and the dominant shades of green are absolutely breathtaking. It is a moonlit night, and the reflection of light on the moving water provides a mystic allure, while shadowy clouds move to darken the moon's reflection. A rural Nipa hut sits alone in the distance under towering Palm trees, perhaps the dwelling place of the two fisherman. The artist's signature is located on the lower left corner of the canvas board (photo #8) and full signature (Jose I. David) faintly in red on the back cover, along with Tala, Rizal, Philippines (photo #10). It was framed by "Royal Art Frames" in Manila. Frame dimensions: Width...25 1/8", Height...21 1/4", Depth...1 1/2". Image dimensions: Width...22", Height...18". This painting is in very good vintage, pre-owned condition, with some craquelure at the top of the painted surface. The vintage scooped, white / pale green painted wood frame is in good condition with normal wear on the edges and corners. I am not certain of the precise age of this painting, however, according to the owners account it was prior to 1962. This painting is clean, shipped from a smoke-free environment and ready to mount. It is offered "as is", with no return or refund after received. Provenance: The back cover provides a pencil written account of the purchase of this painting in 1962. The owner states that she purchased this painting from a Leper in the Terminal Ward Leprosarium in Tala, Philippines (owner's name not mentioned). A detailed and extensive old newspaper article is attached to the water stained back cover highlighting the essential work and dedication of Chaplain, Father A. L. Hofstee. O.P., U.S. Army Air Corps. during World War ll. After the war in 1947 he requested to return to the Tala Leprosarium, leaving his home in the United States west coast, because he recognized the devastating plight of the Leprosy victims in Tala, and he remained there until his death in 1987. The owner of this painting indicates that her visiting group knew Father Hofstee personally, and they donated many supplies to the Leprosarium. Much detail of his sacrificial work is contained in the article. Biblical Acknowledgement: "As Jesus was walking beside the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. "Come follow me", Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men". At once they left their net and followed him". Matthew: 4: 18-20.
