Material is heavy plaster , steel and grey veined white marble. This bust is a special piece. It is an image of the young Alexander the Great (356 bce - 323 bce) the young King of Macedonia , son of King Phillip ll , the One Eyed. Alexander ruled from the death of his father , 336 bce to his own death at the age of 32. He may have been poisoned or he may have died a natural if early death. Ruling for a scant 13 years he is regarded as probably the greatest King and conqueror of the Ancient world , having expanded the empire his father established beyond what could have been imagined. Everything about him , from childhood on is legendary and larger than life. At the tender age of 12 years he is said to have been able to tame the magnificent black stallion which he named Bucephalus , a feat no grown man was able to accomplish , by his keen ability to sense that the horse was spooked by its own shadow so he oriented the animal to the sun in such a way that its shadow was not visible to it. Wounded many times in battle , he relished the fight and conquered virtually every land he went into battle against including the great Persian and Egyptian Empires. Having no heir ( his son was born after his death ) his generals asked him on his deathbed to whom he bequeathed his Kingdom, he replied 'toi kratistoi' - "to the strongest". This phrase was heard by some as 'Craterus' , one of the great Kings generals , and aggressive squabbling ensued resulting in the empire being divided according to their whims , exercises of strength and personal ambitious actions. This bust is beautifully and sensitively rendered giving us Alexander at probably the age at which he became the new 20 year old King. The eyes are fashioned in a manner that allowed for colored glass , simulating a natural eye , iris and pupil to be inserted for realistic dramatic effect. It is mounted on a steel stem which in turn juts up from a square marble slab base. A superb showcase piece.
