Crowell & Co. 360 Pages The binding and front cover has a filigree design in gold. The cover is off white and mint green and gilt decorated. The back cover is solid color of 3/4 mint green and 1/4 off white. The inside of the book has many great black and white pictures. What a great piece of romantic literature written in verse. If you collect vintage books then you will want to add this one to your collection. Lucile ... is a beautiful story told in verse. Each part of the book draws you into the story as if you were one of the characters. There are so many beautiful passages example of one... "Nature posted her parable thus in the skies, And the man's heart bore witness. Life's vapors arise And fall, pass and change, group themselves and revolve Round the great central life, which is love; these dissolve And resume themselves, here assume beauty, there terror; And the phantasmagoria of infinite error, And endless complexity, lasts but a while; Life's self, the immortal, immutable smile Of God, on the soul in the deep heart of Heaven Lives changeless, unchanged: and our morning and even Are earth's alternations, not heaven's" This story is "A narrative poem by Robert, Lord Lytton, published (1860) under the pseudonym of Owen Meredith. The heroine, Lucile, is beloved by two bitter rivals, the English Lord Alfred Hargrave [i.e., Vargrave] and the French Duke of Luvois. She loves Alfred, but misunderstanding keeps them apart. Long years after, Alfred's son and the Duke's niece fall in love, are separated by the old feud but finally reunited through the efforts of Lucile, who has become a nursing nun, under the name of Soeur Seraphine." Condition: Excellent, considering the book is over 100 years old. The back cover is worn along the bottom edge and the top corner of the front cover is also worn. The binding is still intact, tight and in great condition. There is a name written in pencil on the second blank page of the book. There is a water mark on a few of the first few pages, which caused the first few pages of the book to be slightly wrinkled. No dust jacket Considering the age, the book is still in great condition.
