He is second to William Jennings Bryan as the candidate who received the most electoral votes but never acceded to the Office of the President. Dewey sought to be the 1940 Republican presidential nominee but many leaders felt he was too young at 38 and lacked the needed experience, so the nomination when to Wendell Willkie. In 1944, Dewey won the first primary state election, defeating Willkie. He chose John Bricker as his running mate. In 1948, Dewey was the Republican nominee again and chose Earl Warren, the Governor of California, as his running mate. The headlines in the Chicago Tribune the day after the election in 1948 announced Dewey defeated Truman and won the Presidency. As people were retiring for the night, Dewey was in the lead. However, this was later retracted when Truman won 303 electoral votes to Dewey's 189.Seller will combine shipping on items closed within three days of each other.Seller ID#: PC247027 Listing and template services provided by inkFrog
