Description: Offered for your consideration is a pair of vintage CTS 10 inch Alnico magnet woofers removed from my Harman Kardon HK40 speakers, USA-manufactured in 1966. As you probably know, CTS was a major supplier to the domestic speaker industry from the early 1950’s through the 1970’s. Based on the EIA source/date codes on the magnet covers, “137 632”, these drivers were made by CTS (137) in the 32nd week of 1966. This CTS Alnico magnet 10” platform was also used by HH Scott, Compuflex, Ampex, Magnavox, Quadraflex, and many other domestic speaker brands in the mid-to-late 1960’s and early 70’s. So, please see my large photos, the measurements, and read the remaining description to decide if these capable CTS mid/bass woofers should be yours. These CTS woofers are in clean, very good condition. The sturdy paper cones are structurally flawless and the voice coil dustcaps are perfect as well. In addition, they have inverted surrounds made from treated fabric instead of the fragile foam surrounds that would soon come into widespread use. One of the cones has some excess factory surround-affixing adhesive, as pictured, but that’s about it. In addition, the galvanized steel baskets are also in great shape with no undue wear aside from a couple of flange dings at mount holes during factory cabinet mounting. Also, the magnet covers feature aluminum dust shields which add a nice touch. And, the “double-type” +/- terminals measure the industry standard .205”, are marked for polarity, and have never been soldered on the spades. For being close to 60 years old, these woofers are in really nice shape! Most importantly, they’ve been fully tested and sound excellent—very strong with fast, detailed midrange and solid low-end. Plus, they have the special warmth of tone that keeps Alnico magnet speakers in such high demand with those in the know. And, I tested their DC resistance at a closely-matched 2.8 and 2.9Ω, respectively, consistent with a 4 ohm nominal driver rating. Lastly, the baskets measure 10⅛” in diameter, they stand 4½” tall, and the “four-corner” mount holes are spaced 7” adjacent / 9¾” on the diagonal, c-t-c, common to most all U.S.-made 10” woofers. These are a great find for someone restoring their HK40’s or many other speakers that used this type of 10” woofer. Plus, they’re ready for action in your next vintage driver speaker build! As pictured and described, this great-sounding pair of CTS 10” Alnico magnet woofers is offered at a competitive price.
