Description: This vintage context clues activity set, with a dinosaur theme, is adorable! It is brand new and in excellent condition! I laminated the materials for durability, and so that those that needed to be written on could be done so with a fine-tip dry erase marker and then wiped clean with a cloth or tissue, so they could be reused! One dinosaur does have an air bubble, up on the head, that occurred during lamination, but it is sealed around the edges. I have enclosed a close-up picture of this. Three dinosaurs have a longer label underneath the sentence labels I used. This is due to the fact that I originally was going to use these notepad pages for name tags for my kindergarten students. Two dinosaurs, with the longer labels underneath, also have a slight area on the head where a safety pin was once put through. This area is a lighter shade of purple than the area surrounding it. But, the dinosaurs were laminated after the safety pins were taken out, so those areas have been sealed. This set comes from a smoke free home. I received part of this set at an elementary school, Language Arts inservice for teachers. The rest of it, I made by using a 1993 dinosaur-shaped notepad by Shapes Etc. and creating some bones to go along with it. The 2 sheets, that I received at the inservice, measure 8.5" x 11". The dinosaurs and bones, I simply added labels to. This set also includes an answer key and a sheet that gives directions as to how to use the recording sheet. The "Context Clues" reference sheet has the title in bold, white, capital letters, within an orange box. Below that is a definition. Next to the definition is a light bulb. Underneath that "I.D.E.A.S." is written in bold, white, capitals letters, within a green box. A yellow curved arrow then leads downward, from the green box, to let children know what each letter stands for in the acronym. Each bold, white, capital letter is enclosed in its own green box. The rest of the word is then spelled out in black text. The entire word is then underlined in yellow, and a definition is given after each. The "IDEAS" acronym helps children remember that they can use inference, definition, examples, antonyms, and synonyms, as context clues, to help them determine the meaning of a word in a sentence. The recording sheet has the same white title, in the orange box, as the reference sheet. Below the title, is also the same green box with "I.D.E.A.S." printed in it. On both sides of the green box, there is a lightbulb. Below that are 4 boxes that are outlined in black on 2 sides and yellow on the other 2. Each box has a word, printed in white capital letters, that is enclosed in a green box. They are 4 of the words on the reference sheet (Definition, Examples, Antonyms, Synonyms). The 35 smiling dinosaurs measure 7.25" x 4.25". They are purple, with a green stomach and 3 green, oval-shaped spots on the back. The entire shape is outlined in light green. Each dinosaur has a label on it that has a sentence with an underlined word. The 35 white bones measure 5" x 1.75". They have labels on them with definitions of the words in the sentences. To set up this activity, the reference sheet is laid out in the middle of the playing area. The dinosaurs are then mixed up and laid, face down, in a draw pile. Next, the bones are mixed up and laid, face up, around the reference sheet. To begin play, children pick a dinosaur off the top of the deck, read the sentence, state the underlined word, and then attempt to find the bone with the definition of the word. Once they find it, they lay the bone under the label on the dinosaur, so the sentence can still be seen. Play continues, in this manner, until all of the dinosaurs have been matched up with a bone. Children then check their work with the answer key. Next, children use the recording sheet to show how they figured out the meaning of each word. If the definition of the word was given in the sentence, they would write the underlined word in the "Definition" box. If an example or examples, within the sentence, helped children to determine the meaning, they would write the underlined word in the "Examples" box. If there was an antonym or antonyms that aided children in figuring out the definition, they would record the underlined word in the "Antonyms" box. And, if there was a synonym or synonyms, within the sentence, that helped children determine the definition, they would record the underlined word in the "Synonyms" box. In some cases, there may be more than 1 context clue, so children will record the underlined word in more than 1 box. This set can be used by either an individual child or by a group of children. If used with a group, children would simply take turns picking a dinosaur, matching it up with a bone, and placing the pair in front of them. Then, when it is time to fill out the recording sheet, children could either share the one, using the words in the sentences that they matched up, or additional copies of the recording sheet could be made, so that each child has their own. This set would make a wonderful addition to an intermediate classroom to be used during Literacy Centers! It would also be great to have in a household with children of the above age! I am hoping to find it a good home.
