Estate sale find, vintage "The Story of Santa Claus" premium booklet compliments of Gunther's Confectionery that was located at 212 State Street, Chicago, IL. On heavy coated card stock, exact age and origin unknown. Charles "Carl" Frederick Günther (1837–1920), known as "The Candy Man," and "The P. T. Barnum of Chicago," Gunther was a German-American politician, caramel confectioner, chocolatier, numismatist, and art, antiquities, and curiosities collector, who purchased many of the coins and artifacts now in the Chicago History Museum. Gunther opened his own candy factory and store at 125 Clark Street in Chicago in the Fall of 1868. He originated and introduced caramels, which have been a staple product of all factories ever since. Among his confectionery treats were candy chocolate cigars he called 'La Flor de Gunther Cigars' de chocolate.' From the Chicago Tribune, May 22, 1909 issue: After an active career of forty-one years Charles F. Gunther has retired from the retail candy business. The final steps to this end were taken yesterday when Mr. Gunther sold the stock, fixtures, machinery, and the six story building at 212 state street, which he has occupied with his business since 1888, to Jacob L. Kesner, manager of the Fair, and leased the ground underneath the building to Mr. Kesner for a term, of ninety-nine years.
