It was designed by Danish artist and sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved into the cliff by sculptor Lukas Ahorn from 1820 - 1821. The monument is meant to honor 1110 Swiss Guards who were guarding King Louis XVl of France when on August 10, 1792 the Tuileries Palace was stormed by a revolutionary mob. 760 of the Swiss guards , 70% of their number , were slain by the bloodthirsty rioters. The King was captured 3 days later on the 13th , a Monday. The monument itself was dedicated to the men who protected the doomed Monarch shortly after its completion in 1821. The actual monument is engraved with the names of the Officers who died and the numbers '760' for all the dead and '350' for three survivors. It has been reproduced countless times in many sizes and mediums.
