There is a hinged door on the side that open and closes. You can see by the AC cord connection that it is quite old. My guess is 1950's or 1960's. There is no glass in the lamp, just brass. Measurements for the lamp were taken from the top of the metal ring to the bottom of the lamp. There is no chain included with this lamp. Thanks for looking
