Description: Came from the estate of a hair and makeup collector. The Tangee range was the creation of the George W. Luft Company, Inc. based in New York. Its founder, George Luft, had a long history in the pharmacy trade and had developed a number of cosmetic lines before he came up with Tangee. The story behind Tangee’s rise to become America’s number one selling lipstick, in 1940, is another tale of hard work and opportunity that saw Luft, the son of a German immigrant farmer, receive an education and take advantage of it in the burgeoning American pharmaceutical and cosmetics markets. Tangee was a technical marvel. Its tangerine shade (that gave the product its name) actually changed colour, after it was applied, to conform to the complexion of the wearer. It was marketed as a product that “... defies detection. Blends perfectly with every complexion. Waterproof and permanent. One application is required a day.” As an aside, for those who want to delve deeper into the chemistry of Tangee and other changeable lipsticks, you could not do much better than to look at the website “Cosmetics and Skin”. The condition of this three-part sign is so excellent that it looks like it came out of a time capsule. It’s worthy of display in a makeup museum. It measures 10” tall and 10” wide. Will take great care in packing. See my other signs from the same estate sale. Contact me should you have questions or comments.
