Description: Arizona is under siege from the world-wide scourge. We are suffering delays in shipping, so our time limit is now 20 business days. We are hoping to get back to 10 days in the near future. We have all heard of the Netflix series, The Queen's Gambit. But what is it? And what can Black do about it? How should White prepare for Black's surprises? Here are five books that tell you just about all you need to know about the Queen's Gambit. 1) When White uncorks the Queen's Gambit (1. d4 d5 2. c4) the common sneer is that it "isn't a real gambit," as White can recover the gambit pawn immediately (2...dxc4 3. Qa4+). But that is a lifeless way to play this gambit, and there are many variations rich in complex play. The Queen's Gambit Accepted is subtle and difficult opening to play. Ken Smith of Smith-Morra Gambit fame, and USCF master John Hall collaborate on this study of the QGA. Cover price $16.50 2) 'Theoretical.' A synonym for unoriginal!" --Mikhail Tchigorin. The great Russian Imperial master, a giant of his days, Mikhail Tchigorin is best remembered today for this defense to the Queen's Gambit, which takes the fight to the White player from move two: 1. d4 d5 2. c4 Nc6! Tchigorin (as the old spelling has his name) was a forerunner of the Hypermodern movement. It is hard to say whether the opening is good or bad; it is rarely played not because it is hopelessly bad, but because is hard to play. Most tournament players prefer openings that do not require such heroism. Cover price: $15.50 This volume was published by Chess Digest; it is written by the legendary American grandmaster and writer, Andrew Soltis. 3) The Catalan Opening was invented by Dr. Savielly Tartakower. He was asked at the Barcelona, 1929 tournament to invent an opening to be named for Catalonia, and this (1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. g3) was the result. It is a variation of the Queen's Gambit. It is favored by strong grandmasters in must-win situations. This is a fine book written by a Ken Smith, FIDE master, and John Hall, ICCF master. Cover price: $15.50 4) What is the Queen's Gambit? White plays 1. d4 d5 2. c4 offering up a pawn. There many defenses, including the hair-raising Noteboom variation (1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 c6 4. Nf3 dxc4). It is known in Britain as the Abrahams variation. Black invites White to take over the center, but Black gets a huge pawn majority on the queenside. It is very double-edged. Here is another Chess Digest publication for every amateur and neighborhood champion. One of the advantages of the Noteboom is that it vastly reducing the amount of opening study a player needs to do before a tournament. Worth every penny for the amateur who wants something playable. Cover price: $13.50 This volume was published by Chess Digest; it is written by the legendary American grandmaster and writer, Andrew Soltis. 5) Black players faced with that mighty opening often adopt solid defenses, but the von Hennig-Schara Counter-Gambit lives up to the old Ogden Nash tag, "Candy is dandy/but liquor is quicker." Black seeks to wrest the initiative from White at the price of a pawn. The counter-gambit arises from the Tarrasch Defense to the Queen's Gambit (1. d4 d5 2. d4 e6 3. Nc3 c5). White usually proceeds with 4. cxd5 and Black responds with 4...exd5. Not so in the von Hennig-Schara: Black immediately strikes back at the White knight with 4...cxd4. White is almost forced to accept with 5. Qxd4, and then the fun begins! This is another collaboration between Ken Smith, FIDE master, and John Hall, ICCF master. Cover price: $15.50 Total for the cover prices: $76.50 If you are playing White and you wish to essay the Queen's Gambit, these books will prepare you to face a wilderness of defenses. If you are playing Black, this will give you an arsenal of choices which you can use to surprise unwary White players. Algebraic notation, Soft-cover.
