ALFRED NIPON: Already well-established in the fashion world through their Ma Mere line of maternity clothing, Albert Nipon, Inc., was founded in 1972 in Philadelphia by Albert Nipon and his wife Pearl. Their intent with the line was to design ultrafeminine dresses. Albert Nipon designs were sold at over a thousand stores nationwide, including Lord & Taylor’s, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman-Marcus, and I. Magnin. Nipon creations were worn by many fashionable ladies of the time. Rosalynn Carter and Nancy Reagan were fans, as were Barbara Walters and Mary Tyler Moore. Albert Nipon’s concentration on dresses throughout their early years as a house deterred them from establishing any other divisions of the brand until 1976 (with Nipon Boutique).
