Description: Vintage 1996 Framed Limited Edition Linocut, Traditional Culture, Namibia, Africa by Nangombu Kapanda entitled "Amalula" Pencil Signed Limited Edition (21/50) 1996 including a feature article from a 1997 edition of The Namibian Newspaper in which Kapanda describes his passion for art and struggles as an artist. "Amalula" is commonly spelled "amarula" and refers to the tree and the fruit that contribute crucially to the health and well being of rural Namibians, but also features prominently in stories, idioms, and their daily life to this day. The large canopy provides excellent shade from the sun's intense heat. The fruit provides both vitamins, but also makes juice and, when fermented, a sweet and delicious alcohol. The nut is harvested to make a cooking oil called odjove. In this scene from Kapanda, a group of women are resting in the shade under the marula tree, undoubtedly after having completed numerous chores during the cooler morning hours. One woman is making a doll the girl sitting next to her. Another old woman, with a vessel on her head, has paused to greet them and cool off before continuing on her journey. They are surrounded by fallen "eengombe", the fruit of the marula tree. Dimensions: Frame = 17 1/4" x 14 1/4" Mat Opening = 9 1/2" x 7 1/2" Condition: The frame is sturdy and clean and shows only very minor signs of age and wear only visible upon close inspection.
