Up for auction / sale VINTAGE 1980's HANDMADE HAND-PAINTED SANTA RITA WOOD ON TIN RETABLO/PLAQUE BY WELL KNOWN NEW MEXICO SANTERA ARTIST MARIE ROMERO CASHSanta Rita or Saint Rita by Hispanic Retablo artist Marie Romero Cash Signed and titled on back. Measures approximately: 3 1/2" W x 4 1/4” H. Saint Rita is the Patroness of heartbroken women, specifically for sterility, abuse victims, loneliness, marriage difficulties, parenthood, widows, and bodily ills. Rita of Cascia is a saint for all people because she understands the importance of faith, perseverance and hope in the midst of pain, grief, loss and anger. This beautiful retablo is hand painted on wood and affixed to a handmade tin backdrop created by Don Cash. The painting has slight wear not atypical of its age and is quite endearing. Adhesive bumper pads were at one time affixed to the back to protect the wall ( adhesive shadows are slightly evident)Marie Romero Cash is a native-born Hispanic raised in Santa Fe, the daughter of prominent traditional tin-work artists, the late Senaida and Emilio Romero. Marie has become a leading authority on the Santero tradition in New Mexico. As an artist, she distinguishes herself by bringing together a vast knowledge of traditional art forms with a zeal for exploration and innovation. She is able to maintain a reverence for the ancestry and tradition of the art forms, while at the same time, inject them with a contemporary sensibility born of worldliness, and the maturity of a developed artist. Marie's independence as a woman and commitment as a mother play significant roles in her approach, her subject matter, and the power of her work.Marie is an 81 year old iconic folk artist and santera, “saint maker, who resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her work can be found in the following collections: Museum of International Folk Art; The Albuquerque Museum; Museum of Spanish Colonial Art; the Smithsonian Institute; The Vatican; The Archdiocese of Santa Fe; The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and many private collections.
