Description: For sale is a 1868 edition of Life and Public Service of General Ulysses S. Grant, from his boyhood to the Present Time and a Biographical Sketch of Hon. Schuyler Colfax, by Charles A. Phelps. The book is a hardcover, 7.75" x 5.25", published by Lee and Shepard, Boston. The book has 344 pages, and includes several illustrations, including the two pictured portraits, still protected by a piece of tissue. The cover is mostly free of decoration, except for the spine, which is brilliantly gilded, and still bright over 150 years later.The book is in very good condition considering its age. The pages are tanned and there are some bumped corners and edge wear. Some foxing is visible, especially on the two lithographed portraits in the front of the book. There is no writing in the book, except for two used bookstore prices on the front endpaper, with a 1st ed note and a penciled word, see images. However, there is significant damage to the front endpaper, as if a library pocket or very large bookplate were removed, but there are no library markings in the book. There are two holes and two rips in the front loose endpaper, see images. Likewise, there is damage to the back endpaper, as if something (a dust jacket?) were pasted onto the back. Several small holes of insect damage are also visible there. The binding seems tight and square. There is no smell in the book, except that normal 'old book' smell.
