Description: Greetings! Presented for your consideration: This is an original 18th century hand tinted copper engraving, dated 1763 from Italian fencing master Domenico Angelo Malevolti Tremamondo’s renowned fencing manual L'Ecole des Armes. It is plate number 34 and was “publish’d according to act of parliament Feb. 1763.” It is titled Du désarmement après avoir paré le coup de quarté (Disarmament after parrying the quarterdeck). It is in excellent condition and the tinting is vibrant and skillfully applied. The page that the print is on measures: 12” x 18.” The actual image measures: 9” x 14.5. ” Fencing was an indispensable part of a gentleman’s education, in which Englishmen usually had to learn abroad until 1755, when Angelo came to London and scored impressive victories in public matches against English and Irish social fencers. His ensuing fame gained him key clients at court and in the royal family (amongst the first were the Duke of Devonshire and the Prince of Wales). Angelo and his descendants went on to train generations of wealthy English youth in fencing and horsemanship. In 1763, Angelo published L'Ecole d'Armes, a respected fencing handbook comprised of beautifully illustrated plates by renowned English artists like Chamber, Gwyn and Ryland - to name a few. The L'Ecole des Armes presents the classical foil fencing of the French school and Angelo is Text esteemed by many as the ultimate authority on fencing. The illustrations were drawn from life with Angelo often posing as the main figure, depicting principal fencing positions. This work elegantly and decoratively portrays all the balance, fluidity and movement that you’d associate with the sport. Exceptional! Please examine scans carefully as to ensure accuracy regarding condition. Thank you for taking the time to look.
