Description: This unusual example of a mid-19th century drabware jug pitcher dates from around the 1850’s and was made in the Yorkshire Potteries area of the U.K. (see page 235 of The Yorkshire Potteries by John D Griffin). I have seen this particular drabware pottery attributed to Leathley Lane Pottery but I am unable to find out much about that particular pottery. This is in excellent condition and measures approximately 6½”high with a hexagonal shape base of 4¾“. This is marked on the base S of O but I have been unable to determine the meaning of this mark. This is one of the more ornately decorated examples I have had the pleasure to come across. I have attempted to show in the photographs provided just how superb this is. An elephant and camel carriage pattern relief molded jug. It has a hexagonal shape base with six small molded bracket feet and has a low relief design on all sides. One side shows two camels pulling a dragon shaped carriage with four musicians playing instruments in the back. The other side has two elephants pulling an ornate hooded carriage with driver with a long whip and a Sultan or King but certainly a VIP in the back under the canopy. There are palm trees and then, in contradiction to this distinctly exotic, eastern design is a grapevine border. This is a nice piece to add to any collection of relief molded, drabware or small Victorian period jugs or pitchers.
