Though the book lacks the conversational tone of the author’s most recent books, it is still an easy read. Scenes and scenery are vividly described while the dialogues between the male and female protagonists, though traditional, sound charming and sweet. I read this book decades ago. I've still got that copy, and still re-read it every so often. I love the idea that civilizations and kingdoms exist inside of solid rubies, and that I now know how to stop an evil magick even after it's been working a while. Great vintage dark fantasy! The writing is descriptive and spare, the plot has enough twists and anxiety to keep you gasping. Worth seeking out and keeping! …absolutely spellbinding! I wish Lady Sibele was a little more of the hero for the story, rather than the passenger. I did enjoy the story arc for both characters, Fenrulf and Sibele, and their coming to terms with their dark pasts and/or desires. The plot of this book might not be anything new but the added twist of having the villains be the "heroes" of the book made it interesting. _____________________Modern shipping charges keep going higher and higher.
